Beef Shorthorn Cattle

The Winterbeck Beef Shorthon herd was established in the spring of  2009 with the purchase of 4 Roan Heifers from the Harherbs Herd at Leek, These were joined in the autumn of 2009 by 2 heifers from the Brambledel Herd at Ashby Folville. We have since purchased more animals, to make a total of 9 breeding females. Our 1st Shorthorn calves are due this autumn.

We decided to purchase the Shorthorns to produce a more commercial type suckled calf to sell through livestock markets or a heavier carcass to market privatley as beef.Shorthorn Cattle have evolved over the last two centuries from Teeswater and Durham cattle originally found in the North Of England.

The Shothorn was used in the early part of the 20th century, mainly as a dual purpose breed, but a demand for a more beefier animal led to the beef breeders starting their own section in the herd book in 1958, since that time the Beef Shorthorns have been developed as a seperate breed. In 1976 the introduction of Maine-Anjou blood in to the breed was allowed inorder to improve muscling. The herdbook was again closed to outside blood in 2001.
