Portland Sheep

The Portland Sheep Flock was was formed in 2006 with the purchase of 2 Ewe's and a ram from the Rare Breeds Sale at Melton Mowbray. The Flock has since been increased to 11 Ewes and followers.

The Portland is a relatively small sheep only weighing 35 - 40kg and is a heathland breed from the Dorset area, the legs are fineboned with an even tan colour. The face is also of a tan colour, but may have lighter areas around the eyes and muzzle, the nose should be dark. Horns are light coloured, the rams are heavily spiralled, but the ewes should curve through a half circle, there is often a black line in the horn.

The ewe's generally only have one lamb, it is a red colour at birth, and changes to a creamy white colour after a few months. The wool is very fine with a short staple. The breed produces meat of high quality with excellent flavour and texture, to get the best flavour the lambs should be allowed to mature at grass.
